Course Information
Description	Intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research-based expository and persuasive texts. Emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, visual, and multimedia texts; systematic evaluation, synthesis, and documentation of information sources; and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions. Learning Outcomes	Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative research processes. Develop ideas and synthesize primary and secondary sources within focused academic arguments, including one or more research-based essays. Analyze, interpret, and evaluate a variety of texts for the ethical and logical uses of evidence. Write in a style that clearly communicates meaning, builds credibility, and inspires belief or action. Apply the conventions of style manuals for specific academic disciplines (e.g., APA, CMS, MLA, etc.)

Program Student Learning Outcomes
Textbooks	Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. There is no textbook requirement for this course. Reading assignments will be posted free of charge as PDFs and weblinks on the course Blackboard page.
Lecture Topics Outline	Each week we will cover a selection of literature ranging from fictional short stories to poetry to drama. Each week students will be asked to read the assigned works, post in a Discussion Board every Wednesday (answering prompts and questions), and complete a 2-3 page MLA formatted Response Paper based on the weekly readings and discussions; these Response Papers count for almost half of the entire grade for the semester, so they need to be taken seriously and submitted on time in order to succeed in this class. After Spring break, there will be a heavily weighted Research Paper, and we will spend 3 weeks working on this assignment together; you will have multiple parts to this large research paper, and you need to receive my approval on each step before moving on to the next. There will be a Midterm Exam before we break for Spring Break and a Final Exam the last week of the semester. I will also assign pop quizzes over the readings if at any point I feel that students are not engaged in the discussions or reading the assigned texts.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	ALL of the writing in this class must be written by the student enrolled in the class without any outside help. Students are expected to submit assignments electronically based on the instructor's discretion and/or practical circumstances. All due dates will be posted clearly in the class announcements as well as the actual assignment. Each student will receive an email to his/her MyLamar account when a new announcement is posted. Therefore, it's important for each student to check his/her email and class homepage often. The first instance of plagiarism will result in a "0" for the assignment. The second instance will result in expulsion from the course. Collusion means the unauthorized collaboration with another person preparing work for credit. All essays will be submitted through Blackboard's Safe Assign link and a hard copy will also be submitted at the end of class. Assignments must be submitted on or before the due date for full credit. NO LATE WORK. NO MAKE-UP WORK. This class can be a lot of fun even though your favorite activity may not be writing. Just be forewarned: we write and write and write and ... you get the picture!
Attendance Policy	Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with more than three unexcused absences will receive an academic penalty in the form of a grade reduction. Excessive tardiness will, likewise, have an effect on your grade. As an online course, your "attendance" will be noted by your log in access dates on Blackboard, which can be seen by the instructor. Additionally, I will be providing weekly discussion posts in which a student must respond in order to be counted "present" and "participating" in the class.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
